Game held in memory of club stalwarts

CENTRAL Durban Golf Club was treated to a memorial game for two of the founding members of the club who died recently.

The game – with prizes galore – was played at Scottburgh Country Club on Sunday, May 28.

Bishoon Singh and his brother Raj died after a short illness just over two years ago.

Their families hosted the tournament in memory of the brothers for the second consecutive year at the same course.

A third Singh brother, Dhuram, who, according to the club’s publicity secretary, Gary Govindsamy, played a pivotal role in keeping the Central Durban Golf Club’s flag flying high, said that one of his aims was to gather golfers from yesteryear for a once-in-a-lifetime game.

He said that Indian golfers played a historic role in fighting racism in the sport in this country.

“It is sad that we had to split up a once-powerful golf club some 40 years ago.

“This split caused the formation of three clubs in the greater Durban area. We should be one!”

In praising the efforts of the Singh brothers, Govindsamy said the contributions of the three brothers should be etched in history.

“Dhuram, Raj and Bishoon were stalwarts in keeping the game of golf alive during the days of apartheid and championed the struggle for nonracialism,” he said.

“The passing of Bishoon and Raj leaves a void in our club.

“Of course, we mustn’t forget the other founding members of Central Durban Golf Club.”

Govindsamy said that one of the highlights for 2023 was the children’s tournament to be played later this year.
