HOMAGE TO INDENTURED LABOURERS
JAISINGH Singh, left, president of the the 1860 Indentured Labourers Foundation (Verulam), and Anand Jayrajh, an executive committee member and media liaison officer, on Sunday unveiled a commemorative bronze bas relief plaque to honour Indian indentured labourers. The monument is at the entrance to the Verulam CBD. The plaque depicts a male indentured labourer in traditional work attire cutting sugar cane in a cane field, a woman sitting on the ground cutting seed canes, and a young boy and a girl helping out in the field. A paddle steamer (steam ship) is in the distant background of the cane field. Jayrajh conceptualised the plaque and monument, and spearheaded the project. A pedestal in front of the main monument with information on indenture was unveiled by Yaga Govender, a member of the board of directors of the Natal Canegrowers Association, and Divesh Govender of Dawns Trucking. | Rajesh Jantilal
