MOHAMMED Kader hopes to help find solutions to South Africa’s load shedding problems after getting his Master of Engineering (Electrical) degree recently.

The 25-year-old from Montford in

Chatsworth graduated cum laude from the Durban University of Technology.

The Montarena Secondary School matriculant said his interest in electrical engineering was sparked by his dad, Mohammed Sadiek Abdul Kader, when he was five.

“My dad worked in the electrical industry for more than 40 years as a technical and field worker for Reutech, Lasso and RDL all of which were part of the Reunert Group. His passion for electrical and electronics filtered down to me. He used to bring home different electrical components and we experimented together,” said Kader.

Kader was initially unsure about pursuing his Master’s, but he knew he did not want to stop studying.

“I wanted to contribute and make a difference in society by reducing fossil fuel

usage and carbon emissions.”

For his Master’s dissertation Kader researched the effects of renewable energy systems such as solar/wind and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on the electrical power grid.

His advice to others considering this career path is to be consistent in their research careers. “Remember there will always be light at the end of the tunnel – it’s known as success.”
