THE brother of slain Overport businessman Zeyn Moideen said his family were still soldiering on after charges were recently dropped against one of the suspects.

Moideen, 41, was shot multiple times in front of his children after a soccer match in April 2022. Reesin Perumal, 37, who was believed to be the mastermind behind the killing, is now free.

Perumal handed himself over to the police last August. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), however, withdrew the charges, citing insufficient evidence.

Three co-accused Sbonelo Madanono Shangase, 31, Talent Mkhize, 26, and Mcabangeleni Mkhize, 26, still face charges in relation to the incident.

Moideen, the owner of Zenmo Construction and co-owner of Durban Spurs Football Club, was leaving a soccer tournament at the Tills Crescent Sports Grounds with his father, three children and a female friend when he was shot multiple times. His wife, Shelly, was at home with their youngest child. He later died in hospital. Moideen’s brother, Rehaad Moideen, spoke to POST on Monday outside the Durban High Court where one of the murder suspects was expected to appear.

“Today marks 13 months since my brother passed on. We are still reeling with shock. We are hopeful that we will be victorious in our fight for justice.”

He said life had been difficult without his brother. “His 4-year-old son had to go to prep school for the first time without his father. His 8-year-old son recently took part in school sports and cried bitterly because his father was not there.”

Rehaad said Moideen’s death had also taken a toll on their father as seven months before the incident, they had lost their mother. “His biggest concern is to pass away with a broken heart. He hopes justice will be served for those who killed his son.”

The NPA did not comment at the time of publication.
