Tribute to surgeon

BUGSY SINGH Emeritus Professor Department of Surgery at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine.

THE community and the medical fraternity are mourning a brilliant Durban surgeon, Dr Shalen Cheddie, who succumbed to cancer a fortnight ago after a two-year battle.

His death has brought a premature end to the 10-year career of a medical practitioner who achieved legendary status for his burgeoning academic standing, undiluted commitment to public service delivery and exceptional professional and ethical conduct.

I recall Dr Cheddie as being humble, even tempered, self-effacing and impeccably mannered. He consistently showed admirable respect to his patients, teachers, peers and loyalty to the Department of Surgery at UKZN.

There is no doubt this brilliant surgeon was influenced by his heritage – he was a fourth generation grimitiya (indentured Indian).

Dr Cheddie was born in 1982, and raised in Reservoir Hills. He completed the MBChB degree (summa cum laude) at UKZN Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. Following internship and community service at Baragwanath and St Benedictine Hospitals, he pursued his training at his alma mater.

Dr Cheddie completed the FCS degree, earning the Brebner award in 2009 and the Douglas award, as well the Master of Medicine degree. In 2013, he was appointed as consultant surgeon at Madadeni Hospital, and in 2016 he was appointed as Head of Department of surgery at this facility.

Dr Cheddie undertook all his responsibilities and duties with alacrity.

He is survived by his wife Vereesha, his parents Anand and Rameka Cheddie, and brother, Dr Nishaan Cheddie.
