AS THE festive season approaches, metro police and road traffic authorities have implemented plans to curb accidents on KwaZulu-Natal’s roads.

Boysie Zungu, metro police spokesperson, said the heavy traffic days included December 24, 25 and 31 as well as January 1.

“These are the days that people shop for Christmas or celebrate New Year’s Eve at the beach. We will see visible policing on freeways with an increase in deployment of highway patrol.

“The motor and foot patrol will be increased because of high traffic and crime rates during the festive season. There will also be police patrols at intersections, controlling and assisting drivers at the robots.

“We will conduct roadblocks for drinking under the influence of alcohol and speeding, for overloading of public transport and unroadworthy vehicles. Most importantly, I caution all citizens against texting and driving. It is one of the biggest causes of accidents.”

Simon Zwane, the spokesperson for Road Traffic Management Corporation, said: “The busy routes are the N1, N2, N3, N8 and R66, especially on December 15 and 23. The unfinished construction projects on some roads, high truck volumes and mist are just some of the issues (experienced) on the roads this festive season.

“Traffic officers will be deployed to deal with vehicle roadworthiness, speed, drunk driving and compliance with the law.”

The death toll during the 2021 festive season stood at 1451.

“All provincial authorities have undertaken to reduce fatalities in their territories. An analysis has been undertaken, which identifies high crash zones and times when most crashes occur.

“Integrated law enforcement operations will be conducted in those areas to address risk factors such as vehicle roadworthiness, driver behaviour, drunk driving and speeding,” Zwane said.
