MOVIE PREVIEW: Ponniyin Selvan (The Son of Ponni)

CAST: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Jayaram

THE long-awaited film Ponniyin Selvan is being billed as the biggest movie yet out of Indian cinema. It will open in movie complexes in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town from Friday in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Ponniyin Selvan is a 2 400-page 20th century Tamil novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy. It is based on historical events and characters. The book tells the story of Arulmozhi Varman (later crowned as Raja Raja Chola), one of the kings of the Chola Dynasty, who ruled Tamil Nadu in the 10th and 11th centuries.

The Chola Dynasty was one of the longest-ruling dynasties in Indian history.

The book is widely regarded as one of the greatest novels in Tamil.

Considering the popularity of the book and the author, the novel was nationalised by the government of Tamil Nadu. As early as 1958, MG Ramachandran, the late actor and chief minister, spoke about a film adaptation of the work, but it did not materialise.

In January 1994, Mani Ratnam said adapting the novel was one of his dream projects. In late 2010, his interest in the film was renewed. Finally, in January 2019 production started, with Lyca Productions funding the project.

After several changes to the cast and crew, the film was completed in September 2021. This epic boasts a star-studded cast of familiar and popular faces.

Cinema-goers can look forward to seeing lavish costumes and sets, stunning locations and drama. The music is by AR Rahman, cinematography by Ravi Varman, editing by A Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani. This Madras Talkies period drama will be an audiovisual feast.

The movie will be screened at Nu Metro Cornubia, Ballito Junction, Pavilion and Galleria (in Tamil and Hindi), Ster-Kinekor Gateway (Tamil and Hindi), Musgrave (Hindi only), and Cinecentre Suncoast (Tamil and Hindi).
