Time for action as government sits back

HAVING read the Editor’s View, “Minister earns the wrath of Twitter” (POST, September 21-25), this is a wake-up call for all voters.

Upon hearing of the accident in which 20 people died, 18 of whom were children, Fikile Mbalula, Minister of Transport, should have cut short his trip to Qatar and returned home.

Based on how catastrophes and recurring road carnage occur, I believe that soon these truck disasters will fade into thin air, while the ugly situation of arrogant and irresponsible drivers will continue as a norm.

With the government sitting back with a don’t care attitude, people will keep losing their lives.

The government, with its entourage, will be visiting grieving families for the public and media.

Urgent remedial action is required – the establishment of a multidisciplinary and qualified task team to brainstorm and formulate safety solutions before more innocent lives and road users are wiped out.

It is time for action, not words. It is time for stiffer sentences and no bail for irresponsible drivers.

Thereafter we can build a safer and caring city. After 28 years into democracy, we are still not heading in the right direction.

It is time to take the bull by its horn and act decisively.
