POLICE arrested a suspect on Saturday in connection with the killing of Benson Ralph Paul.

The 63-year-old was killed last month on the N2 near Spaghetti Junction, also known as the EB Cloete Interchange.

Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala, a provincial police spokesperson, said officers arrested 18-year-old Tholinhlanhla Ngobeni.

He appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday to begin the bail application.

This week, Paul’s brother, Ronald Paul, said the family was not yet notified about the arrest.

“If this arrest is linked to my brother’s case then it is a step in the right direction.

“Police have not yet confirmed with us that the arrested suspect is linked,” said Ronald.

Paul was returning home to Park Rynie with his friend, Clive Pillay,

after attending a wedding in Howick.

Ronald said during the early hours of the morning, they had a tyre puncture in the vicinity of Spaghetti Junction.

“While Clive was busy changing the tyre, Bennie was on his phone seeking assistance. While doing so, he was attacked, stabbed and left bleeding,” he said.

He was taken to the RK Khan Hospital for medical attention but subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

Ronald said his brother was unmarried and had no children.

“He was, however, a father figure to his nieces.”
