PIETERMARITZBURG businessman Roshan Morar died on Tuesday morning at the age of 56.

The chartered accountant had been battling an infection and was hospitalised for the past two months.

Born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, Morar began his working life at the familyowned shoe shop. In 1995 he established Morar Incorporated Chartered Accountants and Registered Auditors in Pietermaritzburg.

Today, it is a national firm with 10 branches and the only firm in South Africa to be affiliated with Allinial Global – an international network of accounting and consulting firms ranked second in the world.

Initially the business focused on small- and medium-sized family-owned enterprises but, after democracy, grew to provide services to all spheres of government as well as the Office of the Auditor-General.

Morar was well-known in political circles and was being investigated by the Special Investigation Unit. However, no criminal charges were brought against him. Over the years he held highprofile positions at the Airports Company South Africa and the Public Investment Corporation.

He was also a founding member of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) two decades ago.

Melanie Veness, chief executive of the PCB, said they were saddened by Morar’s passing.

“He played an important role in unifying the chambers. The PCB was established in 2002 as a result of the disbandment of the Midlands Black Business Chamber, the Pietermaritzburg Sakekamer and the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Commerce and Industries. They are now what we have today. Our condolences to the Morar family and to all his close friends at this tough time.”

Morar leaves his wife Jyothi and son Jasveer. His funeral is expected to take place on Wednesday at the GVS Hall in Pietermaritzburg. The last rites will be conducted at the Cedar Ridge Crematorium.
