DEATHS

INFORMATION on the deaths:

◆ What was the cause of death of each of the allegedly 340 deaths that occurred during the July 2021 unrest? For instance, how many people were shot? How many lost their lives due to stampedes and fire? We believe that postmortem reports should be the source of much of this information.

◆ When did the deaths actually occur? What was the date and time of these deaths?

◆ Where did each of these

deaths occur?

◆ How and when were the

bodies of the deceased identified and removed to mortuary facilities?

Indeed, it will be helpful to obtain a systematic account of the above especially in terms of time and space as this information can provide deeper insights into how the events of July played themselves out.

We submit that the collation of such evidence is essential for a comprehensive report and findings by the SAHRC.

We are of the view that the commission runs the risk of arriving at incomplete findings in the absence of detailed evidence and factual information regarding the above issues.
