THE family of Rodney Naidoo is seeking answers after he was shot in the head in Bayview, Chatsworth, on Saturday morning.

Naidoo, 43, was a manager at a trucking company. He was not married and did not have children.

He shared a home in Bayview with his parents, Raymond, 72, and Neela, 66, both pensioners.

Annie Naidoo, his sister, said that on the day of the shooting, he went to a vegetable stall to buy tomatoes.

“We were having a family gettogether at our parents’ home in the afternoon. My mum was cooking, and she needed tomatoes. Before my brother left for work, he decided to go to the vegetable stall that’s near their home.

“He was driving my Hyundai Atos. From what we understand, while in the car, three men ran to his vehicle, opened fire on him and fled. He was shot in the head. My brother lost control of the car and it crashed into one of the homes.”

Annie said someone at the scene contacted her mother’s neighbour, who then notified her about the shooting.

“I arrived at the scene to find my brother covered in blood. I could see he was struggling to breathe. I became hysterical and remember screaming: ‘Save him and take him out of the vehicle’.

“The emergency services managed to remove him from the car, and they took him to the hospital. I prayed he would pull through, but he died.”

She said her brother was the sole breadwinner.

“He did everything for my parents. Rodney worked to provide and care for them. Every Saturday after he was done at work, he would pick my mother up and take her shopping.

“Not once did he complain. He was my mother's backbone, and she is unable

to deal with his passing.

“We are four siblings, and Rodney was the oldest. He was protective of us. As the youngest child, I looked up to him. He loved his nieces and nephews, and he would spoil them at every opportunity. His death has left a void in our lives.”

Annie said there were many rumours relating to the shooting.

“Some people are saying it was an attempted hijacking or believe it was a hit, while others are saying the shooting was related to drugs. As a family, we know my brother was not involved in any drug-related activity. We want those responsible for his death found.

“The rumours are hurting our family. Leave the police to do their investigations before spreading rumours.”

Naidoo’s funeral was scheduled for Wednesday at the Clare Estate Crematorium.

Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, a provincial police spokesperson, said a case of murder is being investigated by the Bayview SAPS.
