Making parents proud

DHIRJA Singh wanted to become part of the business world and she did.

She graduated cum laude with a BCom Honours degree in human resource management.

The 22-year-old, of Cato Manor, said she worked hard to make her parents proud.

“My parents come from humble beginnings but they made sure my sisters and I got a good education.

“It was therefore important for me to make them proud for all their sacrifices.”

Singh said her father owned a catering business and her mother was a receptionist at St Augustine’s Hospital.

"My parents have always instilled the importance of education.

“This motivated my sisters and I to study so that we could become independent women.

“We also look up to our parents’ excellent work ethic, which has shaped us to be dedicated and hard-working individuals.”

She said her older sisters paved the way for her to focus on her studies, because they also graduated cum laude from university.

“My oldest sister, Yajna, 30, graduated in industrial psychology, and my middle sister Tanuja, 26, completed her degree in environmental management.”

Singh said it was a challenge not to have face-to-face lectures during the pandemic.

“I enjoyed going to the campus and the library because I am a bookworm. We had to adapt and then do group assignments via Zoom and Microsoft Team.

“The pandemic took a toll on me but the university provided support, and the lecturers were patient.”

Singh is currently serving her internship at a contact centre.

“The internship exposes one to many aspects of human resource management in terms of employee wellness and ethics.

“After completing the internship, I would like to pursue a Master’s degree in commerce because I was offered a scholarship for 2023.”

Singh said through her work, she wanted to positively impact people’s lives.
