Theatre meets big screen

THE Rhumbelow Theatre, a community-run venue located in Umbilo, Durban, is known for its quirky live performances, comedy and concerts.

During the course of the Covid-19 pandemic, like many entertainment venues, it had to adjust to keep the business afloat.

Roland Stansell, the owner of the Rhumbelow Theatre, said they had recently added a high-quality screen and a high definition projector to screen movies.

The cinema screenings will be from February 8 to 20. Rhumbelow’s Classic Cinema will offer a range of family-friendly movies. These include:

◆ The Rocky Horror Picture Show: The cult classic musical film has thrilled audiences around the globe. Not only will this be a regular cinema experience, but Rhumbelow Theatre has encouraged the audience to arrive dressed as any of the Rocky Horror characters, or anything wild, exotic and crazy. There will also be a prize for the best dressed.

◆ Tosca, the Royal Opera (filmed from its December 2021 season In London): This is regarded as one of the bestloved operas in the Royal Opera repertory. From the demonic chords with which it famously begins to the violent twist of the opera’s shock ending, the tension never lets up for a moment. It will be screened on February 8 and 9 from 6pm.

◆ Shock Treatment: This 1981 American musical comedy was directed by Jim Sharman and co-written by Sharman and Richard O’Brien. It is a follow-up to the 1975 film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. While it is not an outright sequel, the film features several characters from the previous movie. It will be screened on February 15 from 6.30pm.

◆ Les Misérables (The Staged Concert): It is based on the novel by Victor Hugo and has been seen by more than 120 million people worldwide.

Les Misérables is regarded by some as one of the world’s most popular musicals. It will be screened from February 18 to 20.

All health and safety protocols, such as hand sanitising on arrival and at intervals, wearing of masks, and socially distanced seating will be followed during every show screening.
