I have the capability and competence

NARENDH GANESH (ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY)

Q: Tell us about yourself?

A: I am a university graduate and have been involved in civic and political activities for the last three decades, taking up issues at local, provincial and national levels. I have been tireless and fearless in my pursuit of justice, fairness and equality for all South African citizens irrespective of whom or what they represent. Being a civic leader, I played a pivotal role when I spearheaded the co-ordination of security and relief efforts during the recent unrest in the eThekwini region.

Q: Why did you decide to stand for elections?

A: It has become evident that we are getting a repeat dose of the same old election-after-election and the pathology of our politics has become so toxic in recent times, that service delivery has been put on the back-burner in lieu of power and inefficiency. We need a tenacious and unrelenting approach to ensure that the ratepayers get the services they pay for and deserve. I believe the time has come when we really have to say, “ask not what you can do for your municipality, ask what your municipality can do for you”.

Q: Why did you opt not to join an existing party?

A: Although I was approached by several political parties to be a candidate on their behalf for these elections, my decision to stand as a candidate was made only about four days before the close of registration with the IEC. However, over the last three months, I was approached by numerous constituents from all across Ward 34 to stand as a candidate, as they believed that I

have the credentials and competence to address their concerns and complaints, especially in terms of service delivery.

Q: What do you hope to achieve if you are in government?

A: I do not wish to make unrealistic promises, as I am acutely aware of the challenges that would confront me if elected, especially in Ward 34, where there is a growing informal sector interspersed within the formal sector, but the communities can rest assured that my tenacity and zeal to ensure that they get what is their due will be fought for without fear or favour, as can be evidenced by my relentless pursuit in this regard for the last three decades.

Q: Give three adjectives that best describe your character and what you stand for?

A: Capable, resilient and competent.
