Gulgula/Goolgoola

GULGULAS/goolgoolas are round Indian doughnuts which are deep fried in vegetable oil. Gulgulas do not contain yeast.

1 cup all-purpose or cake flour 2 tsp baking powder vegetable oil for deep frying

¼ cup white granulated sugar ½ tsp cardamom (elachi) powder 2 tbs desiccated coconut

1 tsp vanilla essence 170ml cold milk

Add the flour and baking powder to a bowl (1 cup of self-rising flour may be used instead of the all-purpose or cake flour and baking powder).

Add the coconut, sugar and the cardamom (elachi) powder. Mix well. Add the vanilla essence and pour in the cold milk.

Mix well until it forms a batter. If the batter is too weak, add a little flour and if the batter is too thick, add a little milk.

Heat the vegetable oil in a pot. Keep the oil on medium heat.

Scoop a portion of the mixture in your hand and drop the dough into the hot oil.

Fry the gulgulas until golden. Use a slotted spoon to remove the them from the oil.

Place on paper towels to drain off the excess oil.
