Pretty Woman

THE American romantic comedy, Pretty Woman, has become a classic over the years.

The movie, which hit number one at the box office on its opening weekend, according to Wikipedia.com, stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.

It centres on a Hollywood sex worker (Roberts) who is hired by a wealthy businessman (Gere) to be his escort for business and social functions. It captures their developing relationship in the week-long stay.

The film’s title, according to Wikipedia.org, is based on the song, Oh Pretty Woman, written and sung by Roy Orbison.

The movie smashed the box office and was Disney’s highest-grossing film.

In 1991, Roberts, who was 21 when she played the role, won best actress for the movie at the 48th Golden Globe Awards. She was also nominated for an Oscar.

Gere was 40 when the movie was filmed. Pretty Woman was nominated

for several other awards, including best motion picture.

Roberts starred in movies such as The Pelican Brief, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill, Runaway Bride, Mona Lisa Smile, Ocean’s 11, Ocean’s 12 and Eat Pray Love.

According to Wikipedia.org, she was the highest paid actress in the 1990s and was paid $25 million for her role in Mona Lisa Smile.

Roberts married her cameraman, Daniel Moder, and they have three children – twins and a son. She runs the production company Red Om Films with her sister, Lisa Roberts Gillan, and Marisa Yeres Gill.

Through her company, Roberts served as an executive producer of the first four films of the American Girl film series (based on the American Girl line of dolls), released between 2004 and 2008.

Gere acted in movies that have been well received. They included I’m Not There, Arbitrage and Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer.

He won a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for his role in the Academy Award-winning movie, Chicago, in 2002, according to Wikipedia.org. In 1999, he was named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive.

Gere is also an accomplished musician and a professional piano and guitar player.

He has been vocal on politics. In 2017, he criticised the then Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, on his policies on the Palestinians and Israel’s expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank.

In April 2018, Gere married Spanish activist Alejandra Silva. They have two sons. He also has a son from his previous marriage to actress and model Carey Lowell.

Gere is a practising Tibetan Buddhist and an active supporter of the Dalai Lama.
