Titanic

TITANIC was released in December 1997 and starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson and Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater.

The movie is based on the MS Titanic that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912. The ship struck an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City.

According to Wikipedia.org, of the estimated 2 224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1 500 died – making the sinking at the time one of the deadliest of a single ship.

In the movie, DiCaprio and Winslet are members of different social classes. They meet and fall in love.

The site also reported that James Cameron, the director of the movie, drew inspiration for the film from his fascination with shipwrecks.

He felt a love story interspersed with the human loss would be essential to convey the emotional impact of the disaster.

According to the list of the Top 100 film quotations in American cinema, compiled in 2005, Titanic ranked 100th for Jack Dawson’s yell of “I’m the king of the world.”

Wikipedia.org also reported that the movie was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, for the most Oscar nominations, and won 11, including the awards for best picture and best director.

With an initial worldwide gross of

more than $1.84 billion, Titanic was the first film to reach the billion-dollar mark. It remained the highest-grossing film until Cameron’s Avatar surpassed it in 2010.
