Hugo Broos appointed Bafana coach

DESPITE reports linking Benni McCarthy to the Bafana Bafana coaching post, Belgian Hugo Broos was finally unveiled as national team coach last week.

Broos is not a well-known figure in South African football, though he has previously coached Belgian giants Club Brugge, Anderlecht, Genk as well as Oostende and Cameroon in a coaching career that has spanned 33 years.

The 69-year-old won the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2017 and also worked for clubs in Algeria which sparks some hope that he can turn Bafana’s fortunes around.

Sir Lewis does it again

Not only did Lewis Hamilton claim a record-extending 100th pole position ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend but he also proved that he is still the man to beat in F1. He outsmarted Max Verstappen with strategy to record his third victory from the four races this season and extended his lead in the World Drivers Championship standings over Verstappen to 14 points.

The win was the 98th of Hamilton’s career and the historic milestone of 100 is likely to happen this season.

Chelsea stun Man City again

Chelsea may have gained a psychological advantage over their Champions League final opponents Manchester City as they downed them 2-1 in a league clash. Chelsea have now won the last two successive matches between the teams as they also downed them 1-0 in an FA Cup semi-final clash last month.

Big Sam suffers first relegation

Premier League relegation survival specialist Sam Allardyce suffered his first ever relegation on Sunday as West Brom were confirmed to go down following their 3-1 loss against Arsenal.

The relegation is Big Sam’s first in a managerial career which started 30 years ago. Now 66-years-old, it remains to be seen if Allardyce will manage in the English top flight again. Some now consider his tactical approaches to be “outdated” and now that his record of having never been relegated is no more, underperforming clubs may be less likely to look to him.

Floyd Mayweather to box entertainer

There is no doubt that Floyd Mayweather is one of the greatest boxers of the modern generation and he popularised the sport in the 21st century. However, he has come under criticism after agreeing to have his next exhibition bout against controversial entertainer Logan Paul in June.

Mayweather and Paul had their first press conference last week and it ended in dramatic fashion with Mayweather and Logan Paul’s younger brother Jake engaging in a WWE style brawl.

The fact that cameras only captured sound from the brawl and not the actual thing has led to speculation that it may have been staged to increase the appeal ahead of the bout.
