Bullying is an indictment of society

THE recent coverage by the POST on bullying is a cause for concern.

Bullying is escalating and it results in unhappy people. It is disturbing that learners are recording bullying incidents on their cellphones and distributing the video clips to other schoolchildren. Where are the teachers? What sort of upbringing and schooling are these youngsters having?

This detestable behaviour should be considered a crime. It is also an indictment of our society. If any individual is bullied, criminal charges must be laid against those responsible.

The court must play its part and a tough stance against learners accused of assaulting fellow learners must be taken.

Expulsion must be considered and there must be a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of violence.

Schools must always be a haven for our children and violence must be eradicated. It is time for parents to actively involve themselves in the dangers of bullying. Life skills training for schools is needed. There have to be strategies in place to eliminate bullying.

We must never allow schools to be a breeding ground for violence. If we allow this, we will turn society into a violent community.
