Man accused of killing dad to apply for bail

THE man accused of killing 40-year-old Crossmoor father Nichalen “Donald” Naidoo was due to appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for a formal bail application.

Naidoo died after allegedly being beaten, knocked and then dragged under a car for about 200 metres.

The incident is alleged to have happened at the end of the last month after Naidoo approached a group of partygoers asking them to tone down their noise. Kevin Poonam, 31, was subsequently arrested by members of Chatsworth’s SAPS Serious and Violent Crimes unit.

He appeared at the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on May 6.

Naidoo’s family and friends staged a protest outside the court during Poonam’s first appearance, displaying placards with the words, “Justice for Donald” and “No bail.”

His family also wore T-shirts displaying Naidoo’s picture.

Naidoo’s nephew, and family spokesperson, Yashen Jeewanraj, said they did not feel any relief after the case.

“There isn’t much relief as we are far from justice.

“We are upset as there is a possibility that the accused may get bail.

“It is sad that the accused might be free on the street after killing a father of three. No mercy should be shown to such people who commit heartless acts,” he said.

Captain Nqobile Gwala, KZN provincial police spokesperson, said: “Members of Chatsworth SAPS arrested a 31-yearold suspect for murder. He appeared at the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on May 6. The case was adjourned to May 12.”
